The theme of World Asthma Day 2004, held on Tuesday, May 4, was the Burden of Asthma. The theme was chosen to raise awareness of the severe impact that asthma has on people's lives.

On World Asthma Day GINA released the Global Burden of Asthma Report, a comprehensive study of the prevalence and impact of asthma around the world. This groundbreaking report provides detailed information about asthma in specific regions of the world.

The previous year, on World Asthma Day 2003, GINA had released selected results of the Global Burden of Asthma Report. The launch of the full Report in 2004 confirmed that asthma is a global health problem that cannot be ignored.
